Who is deenie?
I’m Deenie Hartzog-Mislock, a multifaceted writer with a 20-year career as the marketing copy director at Vogue, Bon Appétit, Virtue hair care, and now, a femtech brand focused on maternal health. But I’m also an Aries, so I’ve been side hustling just as long.
As an editor at The Quality Edit and CNET Perspectives, I write first-person pieces on beauty & beauty tech, wellness, lifestyle, and parenting. My editorial and branded content work can be seen online at Refinery29, Vogue, The New Yorker, Bon Appétit, Vice, and more.
My narrative essays have been published in The New York Times, Longreads, Slate, Bustle, and elsewhere. I’m currently working on a memoir. I write a Substack called B L U R T. Kinda want to learn Italian. And now there’s a podcast. I’m bad at relaxing.
I’ve been interviewing beauty and fashion personalities on-and-off camara for years, from designers like Jason Woo and Adam Selman to influencers like Chriselle Lim, Leigh Lezark, and Atlanta de Cadenet-Taylor. But really, I just like talking to people. I especially like talking about the messy, complicated duality of our daily lives—and what affects our daily lives more than our perception of ourselves?
I’m eager to bring us back to our humanity, especially as it pertains to our ideas of self, beauty, and choice. Beauty looks and feels different to everyone, as it should. Through honest, judgement-free conversations, I want us to worry a little less and embrace a little more.
I’m putting all my skills to use at The Beholder—writer, researcher, and extremely talkative person—and hopefully in the process, we’ll all learn to be a little kinder to ourselves and each other.
